Gyozaro in Harajuku is a no-frills local gem serving tasty, cheap gyoza dumplings. The only downside is the constant queue at peak hours, but the stupendously low prices make it worth your time.

Sometimes, having fewer choices makes life easier. The limited options at Harajuku’s best-known gyoza restaurant, Gyozaro, make ordering a breeze. You’ll choose from fried or steamed gyoza, with or without garlic chives. There are a few side dishes, and rice if you need it, but it’s mostly about the dumplings.

Food here is as cheap as chips. Most dishes here average JPY200-JPY300, which is, quite frankly, a miracle in central Tokyo. Six gyoza will set you back a mere JPY290. Side dishes like miso cucumber and Sichuan pepper beansprouts cost a princely JPY250.

Unfortunately, the drinks aren’t all as cheap as the gyoza is, so a cold beer will set you back JPY500 per glass. If you’re on a budget, stick with the oolong tea, which costs only JPY200 a pop.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s popular with tourists, but this is also means that they’re accustomed to English-speakers. Besides, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another restaurant in the Harajuku area that offers as much bang for your buck. Bring a book or people-watch to pass the time while you’re lining up, or go at off-peak hours.
