For a gut-busting, deeply flavourful plate of curry rice, look no further than Hinoya Curry Akihabara. A single meal might smash your calorie count for the day with toppings like cheese, deep-fried pork, and buttered corn – but it’s so good that you just won’t care!

Though Hinoya Curry Akihabara – or ‘Hinoya’ for short – might look like a bog-standard curry chain, their curry rice is a notch above many other shops when it comes to the quality of their plates. It is everything Japanese-style curry should be and more. Imagine a mound of rice blanketed in a thick, umami-ful, lightly sweet-spicy sauce. It’s comfort food at its best.

You could stick with Hinoya’s classic tonkatsu curry rice, with its deep-fried pork cutlet. But why stop there? Hinoya merits repeat visits, so try out some of the other variations.

Those who love their spice should order the ‘demon-spicy mapo-style curry’ that’s guaranteed to set your mouth on fire. There are toppings like fried prawns, broiled cheese, and stewed beef tendon. Those feeling adventurous might like to try the peculiarly-named but delicious ‘butter corn de chorizo’ curry. There’s even an Akihabara-only curry topped with grilled thick-cut bacon.

In 2013, Hinoya Curry in Kanda took home the grand prize in the Curry Grand Prix, and it’s only been going from strength to strength since then. While the original branch is great, we love the Akihabara shop for its proximity to all the wacky and weird shopping in the area. Stop waiting and head over for some gut-busting curry! Don’t forget to sprinkle on some garlic flakes.
