Kanda Shinodazushi is a quiet-looking sushi shop in Kanda specializing in inarizushi - sweet, deep-fried tofu pouches filled with rice. This is the best place to check out if you want to taste a top-notch version of this sushi.

Most people think of the Edomae style when it comes to sushi - pieces of fish on top of rice. But Kanda Shinodazushi offers a different kind of sushi. They specialize in sweet sushi - specifically inarizushi and kanpyo-maki, both of which Japanese people consider to be everyday comfort food.

Inarizushi refers to sweet soy sauce-flavored deep-fried tofu encasing vinegared sushi rice, while kanpyo-maki is a sushi roll made from simmered kanpyo gourd, sushi rice and dried seaweed. It’s not your typical seafood sushi, but it is delicious - and as a bonus, vegetarian-friendly!
If you’re passing by with friends, get a box of this sushi to share. It would make a great addition to a picnic, and the inari is an exceptional version of its kind. While the first floor is take-out only, there’s a dining area in the basement if you want to have a meal there.
