Kanda Yabu Soba is one of Tokyo’s oldest soba restaurants, and it’s still serving up a taste of old Edo today. Don’t forget to try the seasonal specialties when you visit.

In the Kanda area, those looking for soba have two choices. For low-key, unpretentious noodles, you head to Kanda Matsuya. But for slightly more refined slurps, head over to Kanda Yabu Soba - conveniently located a few minutes walk away from Matsuya.

The slender, hand-cut noodles at Kanda Yabu Soba are, of course, the star of the show. They come in a variety of guises here, like an excellent rendition of kamo-nanban (rare duck slices) or ten-seiro (tempura with cold noodles). Don’t forget to look out for seasonal specialties here. In winter, for instance, you’ll find kaki soba - juicy oysters and seaweed in a delicate broth with soba noodles.

Side dishes aren’t neglected here either. They’re not dazzlingly creative, but they are well-executed. Think duck soup, chilled tofu, and tempura.
Unsurprisingly, it is often crowded at peak hours. Try visiting outside of peak hours to avoid waiting too long.
