Nihonbashi Takashimaya is fantastic for shopping, especially if you like fashion and ceramics. If nothing else, you should visit to look at the elevators, and sample food at the wonderful basement food hall.

Nihonbashi Takashimaya is a fine department store. As befits the flagship store, serious shoppers could spend an entire day or two here and still not be finished with what it has to offer - fashion for all genders, toys, fancy kitchen appliances and tools, glassware, traditional crafts, and more.

It’s a good place for souvenir shopping if you have a slightly more generous budget and love looking at Japanese ceramics.

Even if you’re not keen on shopping, it’s worth visiting to see the building’s architecture, as well as the elevators. Takashimaya still has beautifully coiffed ‘elevator girls’ as part of their staff - they will open and close the elevator doors for you, and accompany passengers up to their desired floors. It’s fascinating to see in action.

Most department store basement food halls in Tokyo are excellent, but Nihonbashi Takashimaya’s food hall is particularly interesting for its slightly old-fashioned atmosphere and strong emphasis on regional foods. There’s a very welcome effort to showcase foods and operators from all over the country, whether it’s konnyaku from a small inn in Yamagata prefecture or organic mozuku seaweed and sea grapes from Okinawa.

As the purveyors from the various prefectures themselves are usually manning the stalls, it makes for much friendlier, less sterile and ‘Tokyo-like’ interactions. This food hall is also one of the best in central Tokyo for sampling food.
