If you’re in Akihabara and bored of tempura, try Osaka-style kushiage at this branch of Shinjuku Tatsukichi instead. These deep-fried skewers are unpretentious and utterly delicious.

Japanese cuisine’s reputation as a healthy cuisine is a little odd, given its abundance of deep-fried food and carbohydrates. We’re not complaining, though, because deep-fried food is immensely satisfying. Few styles of deep-fried food are better than kushiage. A great place to try kushiage is at Shinjuku Tatsukichi, which has branches in Shinjuku and Akihabara.

Weirdly enough, the restaurant translates ‘kushiage’ as ‘shish-kabobs’ - not the most common translation, but it’s not entirely far off the mark. Think quality battered and deep-fried skewers.
Literally, anything can be deep-fried here, and the wide-ranging menu is proof. Order anything from Nagoya cochin chicken to Iberico pork to quail eggs. Try salmon and cheese, bacon-wrapped asparagus and hollandaise sauce, or crab claws. You can order some vegetables if it makes you feel better. They’ll come deep-fried on skewers.

When we say everything’s deep-fried, we mean it. There are options like deep-fried ice cream cones, chocolate, and bananas for dessert. Get the chocolate: a crispy batter topped with whipped cream hides a molten, oozing, chocolatey interior that makes a perfect end to your meal at Tatsukichi.
