Fancy your soup curry with a dose of kawaii? Soup Curry Kamui in Akihabara is the place to go. You get anime-style artwork on the walls, and the waitresses are decked out in maid costumes on the weekends. It’s a novel treat, that’s for sure!

Soup curry restaurants are as varied as they come, but what sets Kamui apart from the rest is the otaku vibe. It’s located near Akihabara – the undisputed geek center of Tokyo – and the nearest station is Iwamotocho. As you can imagine, it embraces the area’s proclivities accordingly. Waitresses appear in maid outfits on weekends, and the walls of this little restaurant are covered in anime-style art.

The soup curry itself is tasty and hearty, with a bright-tasting Indian-style base. They add plenty of spices and locally-grown vegetables – a great way to foster ties with the local community. As with other similar restaurants, you can adjust the spiciness, as well as choose from a number of different toppings.

Options on the regular menu aren’t too unusual but they are crowd-pleasers. We especially like the soup curries with Camembert in it – you can pair it with chicken or pork, and it comes with a medley of local vegetables. The combination is a little unorthodox but it works.
Outside of the regular menu, Kamui always has a weekly special that’s worth trying. It will change from week to week, but think things like triple meat curries, lamb curry, or omelette rice curry.
