The Aldgate in Shibuya is an English-style pub serving up pub grub and a decent range of craft beers - and has free WiFi. It’s a combination that’s hard to beat.

The Aldgate is an English-style pub in Shibuya billing itself as a craft beer bar. The beer selection is indeed quite good - around twenty selections from Japan, Britain, and the US - but that’s not the main draw. What’s important is that a visit pushes all the requisite nostalgia buttons for Tokyo-dwelling Brits. It certainly looks like an English pub, and serves tasty renditions of many familiar dishes. Think bangers and mash, Toad-in-the-Hole, Cornish pasties, and fish and chips. You can also watch English Premier League matches being streamed live. How much more British can you get?

Besides this, The Aldgate has many things going for it. There’s free WiFi access, minus the account-making requirement some networks impose - perfect for travelers. It’s non-smoking, which makes for a more pleasant experience overall. Unlike many cash-only establishments around it, The Aldgate accepts credit cards. All the staff speak English. There’s a gluten-free menu. Best of all, The Aldgate has a non-smoking policy.

For those who want to watch football over a pint, there are few better places in Tokyo to do so. The only tricky part is finding the Aldgate. It’s on the third floor of the building directly behind the mega Donki Hote in Shibuya.
