For good, mid-range sushi without the crowds, venture a little farther from the Outer Market to Tsukiji Edogin. Thick slabs of fresh fish on vinegared rice – what more can you ask for?

Tsukiji’s Outer Market is all well and good to begin your day with, but where possible, we prefer avoiding the queues at sushi restaurants there. Instead, head over to the other side of Shin-Ohashi-dori – the big street on the north side of the market – for quieter places where the sushi is just as good. One place we quite like is Tsukiji Edogin.

Having served up sushi to Tokyoites since 1924, Edogin remains a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike. Think thick, generous slabs of fresh fish laid atop vinegared rice. Most of the fish is swimming around in a huge tank in the centre of the restaurant – you can’t get any fresher than that! Highfalutin’ aged fish this is not, but Edogin’s sushi is a real crowd-pleaser.

Set lunches are quite reasonably priced, especially at lunchtime, though ordering pieces like sea urchin and fatty tuna will drive your bill up a little faster than intended. Edogin isn’t the best sushi you’ll have in Tokyo, but it is rather decent for the price. Make sure you sit at the counter for the full experience.
