Looking for decent sushi around Tsukiji without the mile-long queues? Check out Tsukiji Sushi Iwa, a casual, mid-range restaurant a short walk away from the market. We suggest paying just a little more at lunch to get the most bang for your buck.

Despite the fish market’s move to Toyosu, sushi restaurants in the Tsukiji area continue to ply their trade. By the looks of it, things haven’t slowed down one iota, and the popular restaurants here continue to do brisk business. One place we particularly like in the area is Tsukiji Sushi Iwa.

Not to be confused with Sushi Iwa in Ginza – a distinctly more high-end, expensive experience – Tsukiji Sushi Iwa has been serving up sushi in the area since 1921. The fish is fresh and consistently good. With a decent variety of sushi sets at lunch, as well as options for more expensive Edomae omakase courses at dinnertime running up to JPY20,000 per person, this restaurant sits somewhere in between cheap kaitenzushi (conveyor belt sushi) and ultra-luxe sushi, making it a good mid-range option.

Lunch at Sushi Iwa is invariably better value for money than dinner. Set lunches can be as inexpensive as JPY1080, though we’d suggest one of the sets hovering around the JPY3000 as being some of the better deals in terms of cost-performance. This place is popular with locals, too: you’re more likely to be able to walk in for lunch on weekdays. If you can, make a reservation for dinner, or go early.
Tsukiji Sushi Iwa has counter seating, table seating, sunken tables, and Japanese-style seating on tatami mat floors, but if you have a preference, you might want to ask your concierge to make a reservation for you.
