Tokyo has many unagi restaurants, but few can rival Unagi Akimoto in Kojimachi, which has been going strong for a century.

It’s easy to miss the restaurant if you aren’t looking for it. But slide open the unassuming wooden doors and you’ll find some of the best broiled eel in Tokyo. The menu is limited: it’s eel, eel, or more eel. They are, after all, an eel specialist.

The unagi here is broiled over charcoal, which gives it an especially deep and smoky fragrance. Besides the usual rice bowls, there’s also some deliciously interesting side dishes incorporating eel. You might have a vinegared salad of chrysanthemum petals, cucumbers, and myoga ginger topped with eel, omelette-wrapped eel, or eel liver soup.
Dinner reservations here are essential. They take same-day reservations until noon, so it’s a potential choice when you’re planning a last minute group gathering.
