Shabu-shabu restaurants rarely get any better than Zakuro Nihombashi. That’s literally all they serve – they don’t even bother with sukiyaki – and with 60 years of business and counting, you know your wagyu hotpot is going to be excellent.

Tokyo has no shortage of restaurants serving shabu-shabu. Named for the sound of meat swishing in a pot, this deliciously homey Japanese hot pot dish consists of paper-thin slices of meat and vegetables cooked tableside in a large pot of stock. It’s easily cooked at home, but it is elevated to great heights with high-quality wagyu.

For shabu-shabu that’s guaranteed to be some of the best you’ll have eaten in your life, there’s just one place you should head to: Zakuro Nihombashi. Their marbled wagyu tastes like pure beef butter.

Not only are the ingredients at Zakuro Nihombashi top-notch, everything is cooked in handcrafted copper hotpots over a charcoal fire. All this keeps the hotpot at a consistently hot temperature, and brings out the flavours of each ingredient. The sesame and ponzu dipping sauces are made in-house – none of that rubbish bottled stuff for this place! Add impeccable, friendly service and beautiful surroundings, and you have a night to remember. Put this on your to-go list, stat.
